Griller's Block

I’m sure you have all heard of writer’s block. Well let us tell you about a lesser known but widespread mental barrier - griller’s block. We’ve all been there before. You look down at your grill and for the first time in a long time you feel, dare I say it, uninspired. What you cook tastes great but the meals are starting to lack in variety. How do you break out of this mindset? Here are some tips to keep your creative juices flowing so you can keep producing that juicy deliciousness aka BBQ:

  1. Take a step back. Don’t force a square peg into a round hole. Maybe today just isn’t your grilling day and that is ok. Go out to eat with some friends, see a movie. Just stay away from the grill.

  2. 180. Whatever direction you tend to go in on the grill do the opposite. Look for inspiration from overlooked places. If you follow a lot of similar grilling accounts on IG you might start to see the same type of content and that can lead to uninspiring meals. We suggests trying something completely different. Try a Morrocan or Thai recipe and give the grill a rest. Find inspiration from a totally new culinary technique. Once you’ve mastered a new recipe with different flavors, try to implement those new tastes on your grill, either through a cooking style or new spices/rub. At DUCKCHAR, we have really enjoyed using the techniques of South American BBQ friends and now we’re hooked on chimichurri.

  3. New Gear. This might sound stupid but it is helpful. If you are trying to start a workout routine, you get new shoes, new shorts, etc. You go to the gym excited to get your pump in fresh gear. It helps you get going and get out of the rut. Same goes with grilling. If you are feeling frustrated or uninspired, treat yourself and by a new grilling gizmo that exciting to use. It helps you get your head on straight so you can do what you do best: Grill Baby, Grill.
